Grove Eye Care, originally known as Grove Avenue Eye Center, has proudly served the Richmond community for over 70 years.

The practice began in 1952 with Dr. William Gatten, an optometrist and Korean War veteran who provided care as a medical staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

After leaving the service in 1954, Dr. Gatten opened his first private practice in Mathews County, Virginia. A year later, he relocated to downtown Richmond and continued to grow the practice, eventually settling in the West End on Cary Street in 1965.

In 1971, the office moved just around the corner to a larger space on Grove Avenue—our current Richmond location.

In 1972, Dr. Lee Albright purchased the practice, with Dr. Gatten staying on as an associate until his retirement in 1980.

Dr. Bruce Kiraly joined the team in 1982 and went on to acquire the practice in 1987. Dr. Albright continued to care for patients until his own retirement in 1992.

The practice welcomed Dr. Gerald Neidigh in 1998. By 2004, he became a 50% partner and played a key role in the continued growth of Grove Eye Care.

In 2010, Drs. Kiraly and Neidigh expanded the practice with the opening of a second location in Midlothian, Virginia.

Dr. Neidigh became sole owner in 2019, and Dr. Kiraly remained on staff until his retirement in June 2022.
